San Francisco Grand Prix 2002

The Second Annual San Francisco Grand Prix professional bicycle race was held in San Francisco on September 15, 2002. The race is now one of the stops included on the U.S. Pro Cycling Tour and considered one of the toughest bicycle races in America. The racers faced 8 climbs up the 18% hill on Fillmore Street totally 7,650 feet of climbing for the entire race. The total distance of the race was 104 miles. The United States Postal Service team, led by lance Armstrong, participated with the best U.S. professional teams in the world. There were approximately 300,000 spectators who watched the race. The starting line of racers from thirteen different countries including Lance Armstrong and the
U.S. Postal Team. Racers make their way through after the first lap of racing.

is being interviewed by OLN TV.



The pack comes by with Lance Armstrong (2002 Tour De France winner)
riding in second place. The sports commendators of KGO-TV provide live coverage of the race.



This is the second bread-away group from the main
pack mid-way through the bicycle race.



Comedian Robin Williams makes everyone laugh at the race with his jokes.
The break-away group of racers make another of their many laps.



Their were many support vehicles that follow the main pack of racers to
provide support in case a rider experiences a flat tire or wrecks.









A race was held for celebrities that included Robin Williams,
some Olympians and various TV personalities.





The final sprint at the finish with
Canadian cyclist Dionne stunning the field.

Charles Dionne, 7UP/Nutra-Fig, 4 hours, 18 minutes, 49 seconds (middle)
Henk Vogels, Mercury Cycling (left)
Massimo Giunti, Acqua & Sapone (right)

The finish to the race was very dramatic everyone in attendance was surprised with the final outcome. Lance Armstrong and his team were stunned and will now be aware of the abilities of the winner who was somewhat of an unknown. Only 49 of 145 riders finished the race.
